Yarmouth RNLI Fish Supper a resounding success!
9th October 2017
Yarmouth lifeboat station’s 2017 Fish Supper took place on Friday evening (6th October) and was once again expertly hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club. This annual charity event is open to the local community and raises vital funds - over £2000 this year - to help support the RNLI saving lives at sea.

The Supper was very well attended this year with diners including the current and former Coxswains of the Yarmouth lifeboat, Howard Lester and David Lemonius, plus current and former Deputy Coxswains, Pete Lemonius and Joe Lester. Volunteers from the fundraising and RNLI shop teams also attended.

The Royal Solent served up 112 plates of delicious fish & chips and very kindly donated £5 from each ticket sold. Further funds were raised through the sale of raffle tickets, plus a game of ‘Heads & Tails’ and by the end of the evening the total amount accrued was a fantastic £2053!

Thank you to all those who came along to support this sell-out event and who donated so generously, and also to RNLI volunteers Debbie Cotton (Chairman of Fundraising), Pat Lester and Jeremy Willcock (Lifeboat Operations Manager), who helped to make it such an enjoyable and successful evening.

The next Yarmouth RNLI fundraiser will be a Christmas Fair at The George on Wednesday 22nd November - good quality bric-à-brac would be gratefully received by the RNLI shop in Yarmouth.

Yarmouth Harbour Festival Fundraiser
Saturday 19th April 2017

Yarmouth lifeboat's volunteer fundraisers and RNLI crew members had a worthwhile day at the Yarmouth Harbour Spring Festival on Saturday.

From our gazebo on the quay, they shared information and advice from the RNLI's Respect the Water campaign with many visitors and raised £230 from tours of the Yarmouth lifeboat, plus £135 from sales of RNLI merchandise (regularly on sale in the RNLI shop in Yarmouth).

During the course of the day RNLI volunteers also had 5 dogs to look after while their owners enjoyed the lifeboat tour!

Thank you to the harbour, our volunteers and visitors.

Wednesday 15th March 2017

On Thursday 26th January, the RNLI’s Yarmouth all-weather lifeboat was involved in a momentous joint training exercise with the UK Coastguard’s new search and rescue aircraft off the Isle of Wight coast.

‘Exercise Top Cover’ was a coordinated joint training exercise with Yarmouth and Poole RNLI to test the search and rescue capabilities of the UK Coastguard’s new AW189 helicopter and trial Jetstream aircraft, which took to the skies simultaneously for the first time ever.

During the exercise, the crew on board a Training Vessel from the RNLI’s Poole Lifeboat Station simulated a fire, then made a MAYDAY call to the UK Coastguard without disclosing their exact location and released a distress flare.

The Coastguard Jetstream aircraft circled the area approximately 7 miles south of The Needles, located the casualty vessel and then passed the position to Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat, guiding the lifeboat to the exact location. The new AW189 helicopter was also directed in by the Jetstream and when on scene exercised with the Yarmouth lifeboat to put a winchman down on the lifeboat’s deck and bring a stretcher down by highline transfer, both the winchman and stretcher were then recovered to the helicopter.

Jonathan Mustard, Duty Aeronautical Controller for the UK Coastguard said: "This training exercise was a great opportunity to test ourselves and the capabilities of the two new aircraft working together. Even though the weather conditions were fine, we were able to successfully locate a stricken vessel and perform a simulated extraction of casualties. There were more than 30 people involved in this exercise and I think that everyone would agree that it’s given us an excellent opportunity to put our assets to the test in their new environment."

RNLI Grand Christmas Fayre
Tuesday 22nd November 2016

Thank you very much to all those who came to this year's Yarmouth RNLI Grand Christmas Fayre at The George Hotel and to all the amazing volunteers who helped raise a fantastic £927 in aid of the RNLI.

Particular thanks was given at the Fayre to Mrs Cynthia Gamwell (pictured right) who has been very active as a West Wight fund raiser for 37 years.

As well as volunteering in the Yarmouth RNLI shop, for the past 15 years Cynthia has knitted soft toys and hand crafted Christmas gift tags from old Christmas cards, which are sold at 25p for a pack of 10 in the RNLI shop in Yarmouth. This year, sales of these Christmas tags have already raised £80 for Yarmouth RNLI!

Although now living in Cowes, Cynthia comes to Yarmouth by bus every Tuesday, keeping in touch with RNLI shop volunteers and always helping at any fund raising events for the Yarmouth RNLI - usually accompanied by a band of willing helpers from the Cowes RNLI Guild.

Fundraising Success for Yarmouth RNLI
Sunday 9th October 2016

This year's Yarmouth lifeboat tours and recent Fish & Chip Supper raised substantial funds for the RNLI. As the RNLI is a charity almost entirely dependent on public donations, the work of the volunteer fundraisers from the Yarmouth branch of the RNLI and the continued support of the general public is vital.

The guided tours of Yarmouth's All Weather lifeboat, which are run by volunteers from mid July until the end of September, are a key source of charitable income. These popular tours give members of the public the opportunity to have a privileged look around Yarmouth's impressive Severn Class lifeboat, the Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer). The tours are free but any donations from visitors are gratefully received and this year totalled a fantastic £1485.

Another important source of revenue are the many fundraising events organised by the West Wight Fundraisers; the most recent of which was an RNLI Fish & Chip Supper hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club on Friday evening. This event was well supported by 105 local residents and an amazing £891 was raised through the RSYC donating £5 of each £10 supper ticket, along with the proceeds of a fundraising raffle.

The RNLI Yarmouth lifeboat station thanks the general public for their continued support for this worthy cause.

Generous Biker's Gift to RNLI
Wednesday 5th October 2016

David Coulson (right of photo) recently showed his appreciation of the RNLI by presenting the  Yarmouth Lifeboat Coxswain, Howard Lester (left of photo), with a cheque for £1,000 in memory of his late father, Noel Coulson.

David, who lives in Bedford, took the opportunity to present the generous donation in person whilst on the Island for a motorbike holiday with his family. During his visit Mr Coulson was also given a guided tour of the Yarmouth All Weather lifeboat, The Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer) by the Coxswain.

The donated money is gratefully received and will be used on necessities for the RNLI's Yarmouth Lifeboat Station, such as crew training and development and the repair and replacement of lifesaving equipment.

Yarmouth Lifeboat Refit
Tuesday 8th March 2016
For the past 18 weeks Yarmouth's Severn Class All Weather Lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), has been undergoing a major refit at South Boats IOW Ltd, which is based in Cowes and tasked with re-engining all of the RNLI's biggest All Weather Lifeboats.
Following the initial strip down, an extensive rebuild was carried out - key to this was the replacement of the original twin CAT diesel engines with new V10 turbocharged MTU engines. It also included the installation of a new MTU BlueLine electronic throttle control system, new propellors & propellor shafts, reconditioned & modified gearboxes and a new 110v charging system.  While on the exterior of the lifeboat, new anti-foul and deck paint were applied and the hull's topside was re-sprayed and new vinyl stickers affixed.
The team at South Boats (see photo below right) has worked hard to ensure that the strip down and rebuild were completed on schedule and the Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer) is due to pass out tomorrow, returning to station in Yarmouth on Thursday evening.
RNLI West Wight Fundraisers AGM
Wednesday 2nd March 2016
Dame Ellen MacArthur to be New Chairman of the Yarmouth RNLI
Yarmouth RNLI is delighted to reveal that, on December 1st 2015, Dame Ellen MacArthur, DBE, agreed to succeed Dave Kennett MBE as the chairman of the Yarmouth RNLI Management Committee.
Her remarkable sailing achievements have captured the world’s imagination, culminating in her world record for a single handed non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in 2005.
Made aware of the nature of finite resources through her racing, Dame Ellen stepped away from sailing in 2010 to set up the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which works with business, government and academia to build a framework for an economy that is restorative and regenerative by design. She is also the founder of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity, helping young people to regain their confidence through sailing, when in recovery from cancer and leukaemia, which continues her strong association with the sea.
Dave Kennett, who was coxswain of the Yarmouth Lifeboat for 23 years, will continue to be involved as the Yarmouth RNLI Station President.

RNLI Congratulates Its Oldest Working Volunteer

Monday 20th April 2015

The day after going into work at the Yarmouth RNLI charity shop on 19th April, Pam Skinner celebrated her 100th birthday.

Pam and her husband were keen yachtsmen and supported the RNLI in any way they could.  When she became unable to go to sea, Pam volunteered to help in the RNLI shop where she has been for the last 27 years. It is calculated that during those years she has helped to raise around £70,000 on her Sunday morning shifts.  She has no intention of retiring.  Her one hundredth birthday was celebrated at the Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth on Monday 20th April.

Her family of seven grand children and eight great grandchildren are scattered all over the world except for one daughter and son-in-law in Totland.  One granddaughter has come over from New Zealand to join in the celebrations.

Happy birthday & thank you Mrs Skinner!
